케임브릿지 사전은 동사 'best'를 "to defeat someone in a fight or competition(싸움이나 경쟁에서 상대를 패배시키다)"이라고 정의했다.

"He bested his opponent in just two rounds(그는 단 2라운드만에 적수를 패배시켰다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'best'를 "to get the better of : outdo(~를 이기다; 능가하다)"라고 설명했다.

"bested by their opponents(그들의 적수에게 패배하다)"

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 동사 'best'를 "​to defeat or be more successful than somebody(상대를 패배시키거나 그들보다 더욱 성공하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"He was determined not to be bested by his old rival(그는 오랜 적수에게 패배하지 않겠다고 다짐했었다)."

"A great colonial power was nearly bested by a few farmers(거대한 식민주의적 권력이 몇 명의 농부에 의해 거의 패배했다)."
