[영어 공부] predicate((특정 신조·생각·원칙에 …의) 근거를 두다, 입각하다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'be predicated on something'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If an idea or argument is predicated on something, it depends on the existence or truth of this thing(아이디어나 논거가 어떤 것에 be predicated on 한다면, 그것의 존재나 진실에 따라 달라질 수 있다는 뜻이다)."

"The sales forecast is predicated on the assumption that the economy will grow by four percent."

콜린스 사전은 'predicate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that one situation is predicated on another, you mean that the first situation can be true or real only if the second one is true or real(어떤 상황이 다른 것에 be predicated 한다면, 그 전자는 후자가 참이거나 진짜인 경우에만 참이거나 진짜라는 뜻이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"Financial success is usually predicated on having money or being able to obtain it." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'predicate'를 "to base something on a particular belief, idea or principle(어떤 것을 특정한 믿음, 아이디어, 또는 원칙에 기반하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Democracy is predicated upon the rule of law(민주주의는 법치주의에 기반한다)."
