케임브릿지 사전은 'to the letter'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you obey instructions or rules to the letter, you do exactly what you have been told to do, giving great attention to every detail(지시나 규칙을 to the letter 하게 따른다면, 모든 세부 사항에 크게 주의를 기울이며, 하라고 하는 대로 정확히 하는 것이다)."

"I followed the instructions to the letter and it still went wrong(나는 지시를 정확히 따랐는데도 뭔가 잘못됐다)."

콜린스 사전은 'to the letter'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone carries out instructions to the letter, you mean that they do exactly what they are told to do, paying great attention to every detail(누군가 지시를 to the letter 하게 실행한다면, 모든 세부 사항에 크게 주의를 기울이며, 하라는 대로 정확히 하는 것이다)."
