케임브릿지 사전은 'instep'을 "the curved upper part of the foot between the toes and the heel, or the part of a shoe or sock that fits around this(발가락들과 발꿈치 사이의, 발 위의 굴곡진 부분 또는 이 부분에 닿는 신발 또는 양말의 부분)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'instep'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Your instep is the middle part of your foot, where it arches upwards(instep은 위로 동그랗게 올라온 발의 가운데 부분이다)."

"Aim to strike it on the instep with your laces(운동화 끈으로 발등을 때리는 걸 목표로 하세요)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'instep'을 "the top part of the foot between the ankle and toes(발목과 발가락 사이에 있는, 발의 윗부분)"라고 풀이했다.
