케임브릿지 사전은 'retool'을 "to provide a factory, industry, vehicle, etc. with new equipment or tools in order to improve it or make it more suitable for a particular purpose(공장, 산업, 차 등에 이를 개선하거나 특정한 목적에 더욱 적합하도록 새 설비 또는 도구를 제공하다)"라고 정의했다.

"We should be retooling our factories to build solar panels and solar electricity(우리는 태양광 패널과 태양광 전기를 생산하기 위해 우리 공장의 설비를 교체해야 한다)."

"In the retooled aeroplane of tomorrow, there will be a host of new security devices(내일 설비가 교체된 비행기에는 다수의  새로운 보안 도구가 있을 것이다)."

"We need to re-tool the motor industry, reconfigure the power grid, and convert buildings into power plants(우리는 자동차 산업의 설비를 교체하고, 전력망을 변경하며, 건물들을 발전소로 전환시켜야 할 필요가 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'retool'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If the machines in a factory or the items of equipment used by a firm are retooled, they are replaced or changed so that they can do new tasks(공장의 기계들이나 회사에서 쓰이는 설비의 항목이 retool 된다면, 새로운 업무를 할 수 있도록 교체되거나 바뀌는 것이다)."

"Each time the product changes, the machines have to be retooled(매번 제품이 바뀌면 기계들도 교체되어야 한다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'retool"을 "to replace or change the machines or equipment in a factory so that it can produce new or better goods(새롭거나 더 나은 상품을 생산할 수 있도록, 공장에 있는 기계나 설비를 대체하거나 바꾸다)"라고 풀이했다.
