케임브릿지 사전은 'premise'를 "an idea or theory on which a statement or action is based(어떤 서술이나 활동이 기반이 되는, 아이디어나 이론)"라고 정의했다.

"They had started with the premise that all men are created equal(그들은 모든 인간이 평등하게 창조되었다는 전제로 시작했다)."

"The research project is based on the premise stated earlier(그 조사 프로젝트는 앞서 언급한 전제에 기반한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'premise'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A premise is something that you suppose is true and that you use as a basis for developing an idea(premise는 당신이 진실하다고 여기며, 어떤 아이디어를 발전시켜 나가는 기반으로 이용하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"The premise is that schools will work harder to improve if they must compete(그 전제는 학교들이 경쟁해야 한다면 개선하기 위해 더 열심히 노력하리라는 것이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'premise'를 "a statement or an idea that forms the basis for a reasonable line of argument(타당한 논법의 기반을 구성하는 서술 또는 아이디어)"라고 풀이했다.
