케임브릿지 사전은 'gravitas'를 "seriousness and importance of manner, causing feelings of respect and trust in others(다른 사람들로 하여금 존경심과 신뢰감을 불러일으키는, 진지함과 태도의 중요함)"라고 정의했다.

"He's an effective enough politician but somehow he lacks the statesmanlike gravitas of a world leader(그는 충분히 효과적인 정치인지만 어째서인지 세계 지도자로서의 정치력 있는 진지함은 부족하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gravitas'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has gravitas, you mean that you respect them because they seem serious and intelligent(어떤 사람이 gravitas가 있다고 말한다면, 그들이 진지하고 지적이어 보이기 때문에 그들을 존경한다는 뜻이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"He is pale, dark, and authoritative, with the gravitas you might expect of a Booker prize winner(부커 상 수상자에게 기대할 만한 진지함을 가진 그는 창백하고, 어두우며, 권위가 있다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'gravitas'를 "a seriousness of manner that people respect(사람들이 존경하는, 태도의 진지함)"라고 풀이했다.
