[영어 공부] the rub(문제)

 

자주 하는 생각이지만, 세상에 읽을 책은 많은데 시간은 한정돼 있다. 그게 바로 문제다(there's the rub).

케임브릿지 사전 이럴 때 '문제'라는 의미로 쓰는 명사 'rub'을 "the particular problem that makes a situation difficult or impossible(어떤 상황을 어렵거나 불가능하게 만드는 특정한 문제)"이라고 정의했다.

"You can't get a job unless you have experience, but there's the rub, you can't get experience unless you have a job(경험이 없으면 일을 얻을 수 없지만, 그게 바로 문제인데, 애초에 일을 얻지 못하면 경험을 쌓을 수 없기 때문이다)." 

콜린스 사전도 'rub'을 포멀(formal)한 표현이라고 딱지를 붙인 뒤 그 뜻을 이렇게 설명했다.

"Rub is used in expressions such as there's the rub and the rub is when you are mentioning a difficulty that makes something hard or impossible to achieve(어떤 것을 성취하기에 어렵거나 불가능하게 만드는 어려움을 언급할 때 'there's the rub' 그리고 'the rub is' 같은 표현에 쓰인다)".

"'What do you want to write about?'. And there was the rub, because I didn't yet know('무엇에 대해 글을 쓰고 싶어?' 그게 바로 문제였다. 아직은 몰랐으니까)."

맥밀란 사전은 'rub'을 "a problem, or a difficult situation(문제 또는 어려운 상황)"이라는 의미의 '문어체(literary)' 단어라고 풀이했다.
