콜린스 사전은 'in the know'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you are in the know about something, especially something that is not known about or understood by many people, you have information about it(당신에 무엇에 대해 in the know 한다면, 특히 많은 사람들에게 알려지거나 이해되지 않는 것에 대해 그렇다면, 그것에 대한 정보를 가지고 있는 것이다)."

"It was gratifying to be in the know about important people(중요한 사람들에 대해 알고 있다는 건 만족스러웠다)." 

"He takes crucial decisions without consulting people in the know(그는 사정을 잘 아는 사람들과 상담해 보지도 않고 중요한 결정들을 내린다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'in the know'의 뜻을 두 가지로 나누어서 설명했다.

첫째, "having inside information(내부 정보를 가지고 있는)"

"For those who are not in the know, the company will be implementing some changes(내부 사정을 잘 모르시는 분들을 위해 이야기하자면, 그 회사는 몇 가지 변화를 시행할 겁니다)."

둘째, "having information especially as a result of study or experience(특히 연구나 경험의 결과로 정보를 가지고 있는)"

"He's always in the know when it comes to new technology(그는 새로운 기술에 대해서라면 언제나 잘 알고 있다)."

프리딕셔너리는 'in the know'를 "Knowledgeable or having access to information about something, especially that which is exclusive or secret(어떤 것, 특히 독점적이거나 비밀스러운 것에 대해 잘 알거나 그런 것에 대한 정보를 접근할 수 있는)."이라고 풀이했다.

"I'll give a call to my source at city hall. He's in the know about the mayor's plans(시청에 있는 내 소식통에게 전화해 봐야겠어. 그는 시장의 계획에 대해 알고 있거든)."

"When it comes to coding, Jenny is definitely in the know—she'll be able to answer your questions(코딩에 관해서라면 제니는 분명 잘 알아. 그 애가 네 질문에 대답해 줄 수 있을 거야)."
