[영어 공부] cobble together(대충 꿰맞추다[만들어 내다])

 

오늘 배울 'cobble together'라는 표현은 예전에 소개한 적 있는 'churn out'과 비슷하다.

결과물의 질 따위는 생각하지 않고 그냥 현재 가지고 있는 것으로 대충 만들어 낸다는 뉘앙스이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'cobble sth together'를 "to do or make something quickly and not very carefully(무엇을 재빨리, 그러나 신중하지는 않게 만들어 내거나 하다)"

"I just had to cobble this meal together from what I had in the fridge(나는 냉장고에 있는 걸로 한 끼를 대충 만들어 내야 했다(아마 섞어찌개나 볶음밥 같은 걸 만들었을 듯...))."

콜린스 사전은 'cobble together'를 "If you say that someone has cobbled something together, you mean that they have made or produced it roughly or quickly(누군가 무엇을 cobble together 했다면, 대충 또는 재빠르게 그것을 만들거나 생산헀다는 뜻이다).
못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스라고 한다.

"The group had cobbled together a few decent songs(그 그룹은 괜찮은 노래 몇 곡을 대충 만들어 냈다)."

"You can cobble it together from any old combination of garments(이건 아무 낡은 옷이나 조합해서 만들어 낼 수 있어)."

맥밀란 사전은 'cobble together'를 "to make something quickly and without a lot of care, using whatever is available(무언가를 재빨리, 크게 신경 쓰지 않고, 이용 가능한 것을 이용해서 만들다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"He cobbled together a meal from leftovers in the fridge(그는 냉장고에 있는 남은 음식으로 한 끼를 만들어 냈다(또다시 섞어찌개 내지는 볶음밥 완성...))."
