[영어 공부] instalment/installment((시리즈로 이어지는 영화나 책 등의) 1회분)

 

instalment/installment는 낯설게 보이지만 사실 그 뜻은 우리도 잘 아는 '시리즈'이다. 예컨대 한 편인 '해리 포터와 아즈카반의 죄수'는 '해리 포터 instalment/installment'의 하나라고 말할 수 있다. 

아니면 <메이즈 러너(The Maze Runner, 2014)>는 <메이즈 러너> 삼부작(trilogy)의 첫 번째 instalment/installment이다, 라는 식으로 이 단어를 사용할 수도 있다.

참고로 l이 하나인 'instalment'는 영국식이고, l이 두 개인 'installment'는 미국식이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'installment'를 이렇게 정의했다. "An installment of a story or plan is one of its parts that are published or carried out separately one after the other(한 이야기나 계획의 installment는 연이어서 따로 발간되거나 진행되는부분들의 하나이다)."

"The next installment of this four-part series deals with the impact of the war on the continent of Africa(이 네 부분으로 된 시리즈의 다음 편은 아프리카 대륙에 전쟁의 영향을 다룬다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'installment'를 "one of several parts of a story or article that are published at different times in a magazine or newspaper(잡지나 신문에 각각 다른 시기에 발간되는 이야기나 기사의 몇 가지 부분 중 하나)"라고 설명했다.

롱맨 사전은 'instalment'를 "one of the parts of a story that appears as a series of parts, especially in a magazine, newspaper etc(특히 잡지나 신문 등에 실리는, 부분들로 이루어진 시리즈로 진행되는 이야기의 부분들 중 하나)

"the first instalment of a science fiction trilogy(SF 삼부작의 첫 번째 편)"
