[영어 공부] be in one's element(본래 자신의 활동 범위에 있다)

 

우리말에서는 누군가 자신이 좋아하거나 잘하는 일을 할 때 '물 만난 물고기 같다'라는 비유를 사용해 이를 묘사하지만, 영어에서는 'be in one's element'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be in your element'를 "to be happy because you are doing what you like or can do best(자신이 좋아하거나 가장 잘하는 일을 하고 있으므로 행복해하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Kate, of course, was in her element, making all the arrangements(케이트는 당연히 물 만난 물고기처럼 모든 걸 준비하고 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'in one's element'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is in their element, you mean that they are in a situation they enjoy(누군가 in their element 하다고 말하면, 그들이 즐기는 상황에 있다는 뜻이다).

"My stepmother was in her element, organizing everything(우리 새어머니는 신이 나서 모든 걸 준비하고 계셨다)." 

"Maybe it's because they're so out of their element that they feel the need to talk(어쩌면 자기와 너무 맞지 않는 상황에 있어서 이야기할 필요가 있다고 느꼈나 보지)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'in one's element'를 "in a place or situation where one is comfortable and does well(자신이 편안하고 잘하는 장소 또는 상황에 있는)"이라고 풀이했다. 

"At school she was (really) in her element(학교에서 그녀는 (정말) 물 만난 물고기 같다)."
