참고로 여기에서 전치사 in/on의 차이는 미국식/영국식의 차이일 뿐, 의미는 똑같다. 'in the cards'가 미국식, 'on the cards'가 영국식이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'in the cards'를 "likely to happen(일어날 법한)"이라고 정의했다.

"Marriage isn't in the cards for me right now – I'm focused on my career(결혼은 지금 내게 가능성이 없어. 난 내 커리어에 집중하고 있어서 말이야)."

콜린스 사전은 'be on the cards'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is on the cards in British English, or in the cards in American English, you mean that it is very likely to happen(영국식 영어로 무엇이 be on the cards라고 하면, 또는 미국식 영어로 무엇이 be in the cards라고 하면, 그것이 일어날 가능성이 아주 높다는 뜻이다)." 

"Last summer she began telling friends that a New Year marriage was on the cards(지난여름에 그녀는 친구들에게 새해에 결혼할 수도 있다고 말하기 시작했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on the cards'를 "very likely to happen(일어날 가능성이 아주 높은)"이라고 풀이했다.

"An election is on the cards this year(선거가 올해 치러질 가능성이 높다)."
