[영어 공부] be in hot water(곤란한 상황에 처한)

 

따뜻한 물은 목욕이나 샤워를 할 때 좋겠지만, '뜨거운' 물은 살갗이 벗겨질 수도 있어서 좋지 않다.

영어로 'be in hot water'는 뜨거운 물에 갑자기 들어가게 된 것처럼, 곤란한 상황에 처했다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be in hot water'를 "to be in or get into a difficult situation in which you are in danger of being criticized or punished(비판받거나 처벌받을 위험이 있는 어려운 상황에 처하다 또는 빠지다)"라고 정의했다.

"He found himself in hot water over his comments about immigration(그는 이민에 관한 자신의 발언 때문에 곤경에 처했음을 알게 되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'in hot water'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are in hot water, you are in trouble(in hot water 한다면, 곤경황에 처한 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다. 

"The company has already been in hot water over high prices this year(그 회사는 올해 높은 가격 때문에 곤란한 지경에 처해 있다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'in hot water'를 "in trouble because of something that you have done(자신이 저지른 일 때문에 곤경에 처한)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Rick’s temper had landed him in hot water again(릭은 자기 성질 때문에 또 곤란한 상황에 처했다)."
