담배를 피우는 사람은, 자신의 폐 건강과 타인이 맑은 공기를 들이쉴 권리를 희생해 가면서 담배를 피우는 셈이다.

이렇게 어떤 일을 하려면 다른 일을 못 하게 되거나 다른 것을 희생해야 할 때, 'at the expense of sth'을 쓸 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'at the expense of sth'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you do one thing at the expense of another, doing the first thing harms the second thing(어떤 일을 at the expense of another로 한다면, 첫 번째 것을 하는 게 두 번째 것을 하는 데 피해를 주는 것이다)."

"He had no need to protect their reputation at the expense of his own(그는 자신의 명예를 실추해 가면서까지 그들의 명예를 보호할 필요가 없었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'at the expense of'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you achieve something at the expense of someone, you do it in a way which might cause them some harm or disadvantage(at the expense of someone 하여 어떤 것을 성취한다면, 그들에게 피해 또는 불리한 점을 유발하는 방식으로 하는 것이다)." 

"But sceptics worry that costs may be trimmed at the expense of the patient(하지만 회의론자들은 비용 절약이 환자들에게 피해를 입힐 수 있다고 우려한다(예컨대 병원이 비용 절감을 위해 인력을 축소한다면, 의료인 한 명이 담당해야 하는 환자들의 수는 많아질 테니 환자 한 명 한 명에게 들일 수 있는 시간과 노력이 줄어들 것이므로 환자들에게 피해가 간다는 뜻)." 

"According to this study, women have made notable gains at the expense of men(이 연구에 의하면, 여성들은 남성들을 불리하게 하며 주목할 만한 이득을 얻었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'at the expense of something'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if one thing exists or happens at the expense of another, the second thing suffers or is not done properly because of the first(어떤 것이 at the expense of another 하여 존재하거나 일어난다면, 두 번째 것은 첫 번째 것 때문에 피해를 입거나 제대로 행해지지 않는 것이다).

"Military strength is often achieved at the expense of a country’s economic health(군력은 대개 그 국가의 경제 건전성을 희생해서 얻어진다)."
