[영어 공부] pay through the nose(터무니없이 비싼 가격을 지불하다, 바가지 쓰다)

 

코를 통해 돈을 낸다는 게 무슨 뜻일까? 직역하면 무슨 소린지 알쏭달쏭한 이 영어 표현은 '터무니없이 비싼 가격을 지불하다', 즉 '바가지를 쓰다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'pay through the nose'를 "to pay too much money for something(무엇에 과한 돈을 지불하다)"이라고 정의했다. 

"We paid through the nose to get the car fixed(우리는 그 차 고치는 데 바가지를 썼다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pay through the nose'를 "If you say that you paid through the nose for something, you are emphasizing that you had to pay what you consider too high a price for it(무엇을 pay through the nose 했다면, 그것을 위해 너무 높은 가격이라고 생각하는 것을 지불해야 했다는 점을 강조하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)하고, 또 상당히 강조(emphasis)하는 표현이다.

"We pay through the nose for a ticket then stand up all the way to work(우리는 표 한 장에 바가지를 썼고, 일터까지 내내 서서 간다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'pay through the nose'를 "to pay much too much for something(무엇을 위해 과한 돈을 지불하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"In the city centre restaurants, you pay through the nose for your drinks(시내 레스토랑에선 음료에 바가지를 씌운다)."
