[영어 공부] clear the decks(필요 없는 것들을 정리하고, 중요한 일[행사]에 대비하다)

 

이제 금요일이 9번만 지나면 2020년이라고 한다. 정말 놀랍다. 

올 한 해 마무리를 슬슬 시작해야 할 때가 온 듯하다. 내년을 위해 이번 해도 잘 마무리해야겠다.

이처럼 필요 없는 것들을 정리하고, 중요한 일에 대비하는 걸 'clear the decks'라고 한다. 마치 우리가 식탁에서 공부를 하거나 다른 일을 하다가도 식사할 때가 되면 식탁에 있던 걸 치우고 밥 먹을 준비를 하는 것처럼.

케임브릿지 사전은 'clear the decks'를 "to remove unnecessary things so that you are ready for action(어떤 행동을 위한 준비가 되도록 불필요한 것을 치우다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Let's clear the decks and then we can start cooking dinner(필요 없는 것 정리부터 좀 하면 저녁 요리를 시작할 수 있어)."

콜린스 사전은 'clear the decks'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you clear the decks, you get ready to start something new by finishing any work that has to be done or getting rid of any problems that are in the way(clear the decks 한다면, 지금까지 행해져 왔던 일을 끝내거나 방해가 되는 문제를 없앰으로써 새로운 것을 시작할 준비를 하는 것이다).

"The hostage release could clear the decks for war(인질 석방은 전쟁을 위한 준비일 수 있다)." 

"Clear the decks before you think of taking on any more responsibilities(더 많은 책임을 지려 하기 전에 하던 일부터 끝내라)."

맥밀란 사전은 'clear the decks'를 "to get rid of everything that is not needed, or to deal with everything that needs to be done so that you can start doing something more important(필요하지 않은 것을 모두 없애거나, 더 중요한 일을 시작할 수 있도록 해야 할 일을 모두 처리하다)"라고 풀이했다. 

"The Government has cleared the decks for an early general election(정부는 조기 총선을 위한 준비를 해 왔다)."
