[영어 공부] save the day/situation(곤경[실패]을 면하게 하다, 문제를 해결하다)

 

슈퍼맨 같은 슈퍼히어로나 닥터 후 같은 영웅들은 늘 'save the day', 그러니까 곤란하고 어려운 상황을 해결하거나 사람들을 구한다(말 그대로 또는 비유적으로).

우리도 어떤 일을 해결하고 나서 'save the day'라는 표현을 써 보자. 그러면 자신이 마치 슈퍼히어로나 영웅이 된 것 같은 기분이 들어서 좋지 않을까.

케임브릿지 사전은 'save the day'를 "to do something that prevents a likely defeat or failure(일어날 수도 있는 패배 또는 실패를 막는 일을 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The team seemed to be heading for disaster until a late goal saved the day(그 팀은 재앙을 향해 가는 것 같았으나, 때 늦은 골 덕분에 패배를 면했다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'save the day'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone or something saves the day in a situation which seems likely to fail, they manage to make it successful(실패할 것 같아 보이는 상황에서 누군가 또는 무엇이 save the day 한다면, 그것을 가까스로 성공하게 만드는 것이다)."

"...this story about how he saved the day at his daughter's birthday party(그가 딸의 생일 파티에서 문제를 해결했는지에 대한 이 이야기)." 

"A last moment election can save the day(마지막 순간의 투표가 패배를 면하게 할 수 있습니다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'save the day/situation'을 "to do something that prevents a situation from becoming unpleasant, embarrassing, or unsuccessful(어떤 상황이 불쾌해지거나, 창피스러워지거나, 또는 실패하게 되는 것을 막는 일을 하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"I locked myself out but Yuki had her keys and saved the day(나는 방/집 문이 잠겼으나 유키에게 열쇠가 있어서 살 수 있었다)."
