[영어 공부] de facto(사실상의, 실질적인)

 

요즘은 동거에 대한 인식이 그래도 예전보다 조금 나아진 것 같다.

동거는 영어로 'de facto marriage'라고 하는데, 호주/오스트레일리아에는 결혼하지 않더라도 동거를 하고 가정사를 공유하고 일반적으로 부부가 하는 것을 나눠서 하는, 정말 결혼식만 안 올렸다 뿐이지 실질적으로 결혼한 거나 마찬가지인 커플들에게도 'de facto partner'의 지위를 부여하여, 비자(영주권)를 신청할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'de facto'를 "existing in fact, although perhaps not intended, legal, or accepted(설혹 의도하지 않거나, 법적이지 않거나, 받아들여지지 않더라 하더라도, 실질적으로 존재하는)"라고 정의했다.

"The city is rapidly becoming the de facto centre of the financial world(그 도시는 실질적으로 세계 경제의 중심이 되어 가고 있다)." 

"He's her de facto husband though they're not actually married(그들은 결혼하지 않았지만, 그는 실질적으로 그의 남편이나 다름없다)." 

"English is de facto the common language of much of the world today(영어는 오늘날 세계 대부분에서 사실상 공용어로 통한다)." 

"If it is on British soil then it is de facto British(그것이 영국 땅에 있다면 사실상 영국의 소유이다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'de facto'를 이렇게 설명했다. "De facto is used to indicate that something is a particular thing, even though it was not planned or intended to be that thing(de facto는 어떤 것이 딱 그것이 되려고 계획되거나 의도되지 않았더라도 그것이 특정한 것임을 나타내기 위해 쓰인다)."

"This might be interpreted as a de facto recognition of the republic's independence(이것은 그 공화국의 독립을 사실상 인정하는 것으로 해석될 여지가 있다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'de facto'를 "actual, even though not official(공식적으로는 아니라고 해도 사실상)"이라고 풀이했다.

"English is the de facto language of the computer industry(영어는 컴퓨터 업계의 실질적인 공용어이다)."
