[영어 공부] comedown(실추, 몰락, 실망)

 

세상 만사는 다 상대적인 것 같다. 예를 들어 올해 1천만 원을 벌게 되었다면, 작년에 1백만 원을 벌던 사람에게는 10배나 되는 큰돈이니 엄청 큰 행복이겠지만, 1억을 벌던 사람이 1천만 원을 벌게 된다면 'comedown(실추, 몰락, 실망)'일 것이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'comedown'을 "a situation that is not as good as the one you were in before(이전에 있던 것만큼 좋지 않은 상황)"라고 정의했다.

"These days he plays to audiences of a hundred or fewer which is a bit of a comedown after Wembley Stadium(요즘에 그는 백 명 이하의 관중 앞에서 연주하는데, 웸블리 스타디움에서 공연한 이후에 그런다니 조금 실망이다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'comedown'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is a comedown, you think that it is not as good as something else that you have just done or had(어떤 것이 comedown이라고 하면, 그것이 직전에 하거나 가졌던 어떤 것만큼 좋지 못하다고 생각하는 것이다)."

"The prospect of relegation is a comedown for a club that finished second two seasons ago(좌천될지도 모른다는 전망은 두 시즌 전에 2위로 끝낸 클럽에게는 몰락인 셈이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'comedown'을 "a situation in which you suddenly have less status or fewer advantages than you had previously(이전에 했던 것보다 낮은 지위 또는 적은 이점을 가진 상황)"라고 풀이했다.

"The accommodation was something of a comedown from the comparative luxury of the hotel(그 호텔의 상대적 호화로움에 비하면 그 숙소는 약간 실망이었다)."
