[영어 공부] caliber/calibre((사람·사물의) 자질, 역량)

 

'caliber(미국식) 또는 'calibre(영국식)'는 '(사람·사물의) 자질, 역량'이라는 뜻인데, 문맥에 맞게 적절히 '급, 수준, 클라스' 등으로 번역해도 무난할 듯싶다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'calibre'를 "the quality of someone or something, especially someone's ability(사람 또는 사물의 자질, 특히 누군가의 능력)"라고 정의했다.

"If teaching paid more it might attract people of (a) higher calibre(가르치는 일의 보수가 더 높았다면 많은 역량을 가진 사람들을 끌어모을지도 모른다)." 

"The competition entries were of such (a) high calibre that judging them was very difficult(그 시합에 참여한 사람들의 수준이 높아서 판정을 내리기 무척 어려웠다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'calibre'를 이렇게 설명했다. "The calibre of something is its quality, especially when it is good(무언가의 calibre는 자질, 특히 그것이 높을 때를 가리킨다)".

"The caliber of his accomplishments produced a lasting influence(그가 성취한 업적의 자질은 지속적인 영향력을 끼쳤다)." 

"The calibre of teaching was very high(교육의 수준이 무척 높았다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'calibre'를 "the level of someone’s ability, intelligence etc, or the standard or quality of something, especially when it is high(개인의 능력, 지성 등, 또는 사물의 표준 또는 질, 특히 그것이 높을 때를 말한다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The department has the calibre of staff to make the project work(그 부서는 그 프로젝트가 굴러가게 만들 정도로 직원 수준이 높다)." 

"a film with a high-calibre cast(수준 높은 캐스트를 가진 영화)"
