[영어 공부] fork out sth(마지못해 돈을 들이다[내다])

 

돈을 정말 기쁘게 낼 수 있을 때가 있는가 하면, 정말 돈 내기 아까울 때가 있다.

후자 같은 때는 'fork out' 하게 된다. '마지못해 돈을 들이다[내다]'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'fork out sth'을 "to pay an amount of money, especially unwillingly(특히 마지못해, 일정한 금액의 돈을 지불하다)"라고 정의했다.

"I forked out ten quid for/on the ticket(나는 그 표를 사는 데 10달러를 냈다)." 

"I couldn't persuade him to fork out for a new one(나는 그가 새것을 사는 데 돈을 들이라고 설득할 수 없었다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'fork out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you fork out for something, you spend a lot of money on it(어떤 것에 fork out 한다면, 그것에 많은 돈을 들이는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"He will have to fork out for private school fees for Nina(그는 니나를 위해 사립 학교 등록금을 내 줘야 할 것이다)."

"You don't ask people to fork out every time they drive up the motorways(사람들에게 고속도로를 달릴 때마다 돈을 내라고 요구하지는 않잖아)."

"Britons fork out more than a billion pounds a year on toys(영국인들은 일 년에 장난감에 1조 파운드 이상을 쓴다)."  

맥밀란 사전은 'fork out'을 "to spend money on something, especially when you do not want to(특히 그러고 싶지 않을 때 어떤 것에 돈을 쓰다)라고 풀이했다.

"I’m not forking out £400 on ski clothes!(스키복에 400파운드씩이나 쓸 수는 없어!)" 

"We immediately forked over the extra money to get faster internet(우리는 더 빠른 인터넷을 얻기 위해 즉시 가욋돈을 냈다)."
