[영어 공부] hit/strike home((말 따위가) 급소[정곡, 요점]를 찌르다, 감명을 주다)

 

종종 책을 읽다가 너무나 통감하고, 공감하고, 꼭 내 얘기 같아서 마음이 아린 구절들이 있다. 이럴 때 그 말이 hit home 또는 strike home 했다고 말할 수 있다. '(말 따위가) 급소[정곡, 요점]를 찌르다, 감명을 주다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'hit home'을 "to cause you to realize exactly how unpleasant or difficult something is(어떤 것이 얼마나 불쾌한지 또는 어려운지 정확히 깨닫도록 유도하다)"라고 정의했다. 

"The full horror of the war only hit home when we started seeing the television pictures of it in our living rooms(우리가 거실에서 TV를 볼 때 전쟁의 그 끔찍함이 온전히 전해졌다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'to hit home to strike home' 또는 'to hit home'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If a situation or what someone says hits home or strikes home, people accept that it is real or true, even though it may be painful for them to realize(어떤 상황 또는 누군가 하는 말이 hit home 또는 strike home 한다면, 그것이 인정하기 고통스러운 일이라 해도 사람들은 그것이 사실이라고, 또는 참이라고 받아들이는 것이다).

"Did the reality of war finally hit home?(전쟁의 현실을 드디어 통감하는 것인가?)"

"Israeli officials say that message struck home(이스라엘 관리들은 그 메시지가 요점을 찔렀다고 말한다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'hit/strike home'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if something that you say hits or strikes home, people understand it and accept it(당신이 말하는 것이 hit 또는 strike home 한다면, 사람들이 그것을 이해하고 받아들이는 것이다)"

"The President struck home with his call for responsible saving(대통령이 책임감 있는 절약을 요구한 것은 급소를 찌르는 말이었다)."
