[영어 공부] go pear-shaped(잘못되다)

 

어쩌다가 이런 표현이 생겼는지에 대해서는 여러 가지 썰이 분분하지만, 한 가지 확실한 것은 'go pear-shaped'는 '일이 잘못되다[실패하다, 망하다]'라는 뜻이라는 사실이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'go pear-shaped'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a plan goes pear-shaped, it fails(계획이 go pear-shaped 한다면, 실패하는 것이다)."

"We'd planned to go away for the weekend, but it all went pear-shaped(우리는 주말에 놀러 가려고 했는데, 그 계획이 잘못돼 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go pear-shaped'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a situation goes pear-shaped, bad things start happening(어떤 상황이 go pear-shaped 한다면, 나쁜 일들이 일어나기 시작하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"He feared his career had gone a bit pear-shaped(그는 자신의 커리어가 조금 잘못된 게 아닌지 걱정했다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'go pear-shaped'를 "to become unsuccessful(실패하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"At that point things started to go pear-shaped for the business(그 시점에서 사업이 나빠지기 시작했다)."
