[영어 공부] grapple with sth(~을 해결하려고 노력하다)

 

'grapple'은 무엇을 붙잡고 싸운다는 뜻이다.

우리말에서도 어떤 일을 극복하거나 이루기 위해 무진 애를 쓰는 걸 '씨름하다'라고 하듯 영어에서도 'grapple with sth'이라고 하면 '~을 해결하려고 노력하다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'grapple with sth'dmf "to try to deal with or understand a difficult problem or subject(어떤 문제 또는 주제를 다루거나 이해하려고 노력하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Today, many Americans are still grappling with the issue of race(오늘날 많은 미국인들은 여전히 인종 문제로 고심하고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'grapple with sth'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you grapple with a problem or difficulty, you try hard to solve it(grapple with a problem or difficulty(문제 또는 어려움) 한다면, 그것을 풀려고 애쓰는 것이다).

"The economy is just one of several critical problems the country is grappling with(경제는 이 나라가 씨름하고 있는 몇 가지 중대한 문제들 중 하나에 불과하다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'grapple with something'을 "to try hard to understand a difficult idea or to solve a difficult problem(어려운 아이디어를 이해하려고 또는 어려운 문제를 풀려고 애쓰다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The government continued to grapple with the issue of public transport(정부는 대중 교통의 문제를 해결하려고 여전히 애를 썼다)."
