[영어 공부] shell out(큰돈을 들이다[쏟아붓다])

 

'shell out'은 '큰돈을 들이다[쏟아붓다]'라는 뜻이다. 아껴 둔 쌈짓돈을 '껍데기(shell)' 안에서 주섬주섬 꺼내는 모습을 상상하면 외우기 쉽지 않을까.

케임브릿지 사전은 'shell out'을 "to pay money for something, especially when the cost is unexpected and not wanted(특히 비용이 예상 밖이고 원하지 않는 것일 때, 무엇을 위해 돈을 내다)"라고 정의했다.

"If we lose the case, we'll be forced to shell out(우리가 이 사건에서 지면, 큰돈을 내야만 할 거야)."

"Courts have ordered tobacco companies to shell out millions of dollars in damages to smokers(법원은 담배 회사들이 흡연자들에게 피해 보상으로 수백만 달러를 지급하라고 명령했다)."

"They were worried about having to shell out for training additional staff(그들은 추가된 직원들을 훈련하는 데 큰돈을 들여야 할지 걱정했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shell out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you shell out for something, you spend a lot of money on it(어떤 것에 shell out 한다면, 거기에 큰돈을 들이는 것이다)." 인포멀한(informal) 표현이다.

"You won't have to shell out a fortune for it(그걸 위해 막대한 돈을 들일 필요 없어)."

"Since they wouldn’t share, I ended up shelling out for two hotel rooms(그들이 돈을 나눠 내려고 하지 않아서, 내가 호텔 방 두 개의 숙박료를 지불하고 말았다)."
