[영어 공부] pecking order((집단 구성원 사이의) 서열, 세력 순위)

 

닭은 제일 우두머리인 수탉이 그 아래 2인자 수탉을 쪼아대고, 2인자 수탉은 3인자 수탉을, 3인자는 그 아래 수탉을 쪼는 식으로 힘에 따라 서열이 정해져 있다. 이런 서열은 인간 사회에도 물론 존재한다. 그래서 '서열, 세력 순위'를 영어로 'pecking order'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'pecking order'를 "an informal social system in which some people or groups know they are more or less important than others(어떤 사람들 또는 그룹들이 다른 이들에 비해 얼마나 더 또는 덜 중요한지 아는 비공식적 사회 체계)"라고 정의했다.

"There's a clearly established pecking order in this office(사무실에는 명확하게 자리잡은 서열이 있다)."

"He started as a clerk but gradually rose in the pecking order(그는 사무직으로 시작했지만 점차 서열이 상승했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pecking order'를 이렇게 설명했다. "The pecking order of a group is the way that the positions people have are arranged according to their status or power within the group(어떤 그룹의 pecking order는 사람들이 그룹 내에서 각자의 지위 또는 권력에 따라 차지하는 자리를 말한다)."

"He knew his place in the pecking order(그는 서열 내에서 자신의 자리가 어디인지 안다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'pecking order'를 "the order of power or importance within a group of people or animals(사람 또는 동물의 그룹 내에서 권력 또는 중요성의 순서)"라고 풀이했다.
