[영어 공부] cling(꼭 붙잡다, 매달리다, 달라[들러]붙다)

 

'cling'은 무섭거나 걱정이 되거나 해서 어떤 것 또는 누군가에게 찰싹 들러붙는 걸 말한다. 예컨대 애착 인형을 꼭 쥐고 놓지 않으려는 아이에게 'cling'이라는 단어를 쓸 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'cling'을 "to stick onto or hold something or someone tightly, or to refuse to stop holding it, him, or her(어떤 것 또는 누구에게 들러붙거나 어떤 것 또는 누구를 꼭 붙잡거나, 그것/그/그녀를 놓기를 거부하다)"라고 정의했다. 

"We got so wet that our clothes clung to us(우리는 너무 푹 젖어서 옷이 몸에 달라붙을 정도였다)."

"They clung together in terror as the screams grew louder(비명소리가 커질수록 그들은 공포에 질려 서로를 꼭 붙잡았다)."

"One little girl was clinging onto a cuddly toy(한 소녀가 껴안고 다니는 인형을 꼭 붙잡았다)."

"She clung to the handrail as she walked down the slippery steps(미끄러운 계단을 걸어내려가며 그녀는 난간을 꼭 붙잡았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cling'을 "to hold onto someone or something tightly with your hands or arms, for example because you are afraid(예를 들어 무섭기 때문에 누군가 또는 어떤 것을 손이나 팔로 꼭 붙잡다)"라고 설명했다.

"Crossing the bridge, she felt dizzy and clung to the rails(다리를 건너며 현기증을 느낀 그녀는 난간을 붙잡았다)."

"Some children were sobbing and clinging to their mothers(어떤 아이들은 훌쩍훌쩍 울었고 어머니에게 들러붙었다)."

"The two monkeys clung tightly together(원숭이 두 마리가 서로를 꼭 껴안았다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'cling'을 "to stay very close to someone, usually because you want them to protect you(대개 그들이 자신을 보호해 주기를 바라기 때문에 그 사람에게 바짝 붙어 있다)"라고 풀이했다.

"He still clings to his mother even at the age of ten(그는 열 살이나 됐는데도 엄마 곁에 꼭 붙어 있는다)."
