[영어 공부] recap(요약 / (이미 한 말, 결정 사항 등의) 요약하다, 개요를 말하다)

 

'recap'은 'recapitualate(개요를 말하다; 동사)' 또는 'recapitulation(개요; 명사)'의 준말이다. 어떤 것을 간단하게 요약해 말하는 것을 말한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'recap'을 "to repeat the main points of an explanation or a description(설명이나 묘사의 주요점을 반복하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Finally, the teacher recapped the main points of the lesson(마침내, 선생님은 수업의 주요점을 요약해 주셨다)."

"To recap, our main aim is to increase sales by 15 percent this year(정리하자면, 우리의 주요 목표는 올해 판매량을 15% 상승시키는 것입니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'recap'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You can say that you are going to recap when you want to draw people's attention to the fact that you are going to repeat the main points of an explanation, argument, or description, as a summary of it(설명이나 주장, 또는 묘사의 주요점을 개요로 정리해 반복하겠다는 사실에 주의를 끌고 싶을 때 recap 하겠다고 말할 수 있다)."

"To recap briefly, an agreement negotiated to cut the budget deficit was rejected 10 days ago(간략히 요약하자면, 예산 적자를 줄이기 위해 타결됐던 협정이 10일 전에 거부당했습니다)."

"Can you recap the points included in the regional conference proposal?(지역 콘퍼런스 제안에 포함된 쟁점들을 요약해 주실 수 있나요?)" 

'recap'을 명사로 쓴 예는 다음과 같다.

"Each report starts with a recap of how we did versus our projections(각 보고서는 실제 결과를 예상과 비교해 요약하는 것으로 시작한다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'recap'을 "to describe what has already been done or decided, without repeating the details(이미 행해졌거나 결정된 것을, 구체적인 사항을 반복하지 않고 묘사하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"We’ll just recap briefly on what we did(저희가 한 일은 간단히 요약해 말씀드리겠습니다)."
