[영어 공부] in the heat of the moment(발끈해서, 그만 흥분해서)

 

화가 나거나 흥분하면 몸에 열이 오른다. 이때 떠올린 생각이 반드시 좋다거나 지혜롭다고는 할 수 없을 것이다. 그래서 'in the heat of the moment'라고 하면 순간적으로 흥분하거나, 화를 내거나, 욱해서, 또는 발끈해서 어떤 일을 하거나 어떤 말을 내뱉는다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'in the heat of the moment'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you say or do something in the heat of the moment, you say or do it without thinking because you are very angry or excited(어떤 것을 in the heat of the moment에 말하거나 한다면, 아주 화가 났거나 흥분해서 생각하지도 않고 말하거나 해 버리는 것이다)."

"He didn't mean it - he said it in the heat of the moment(그건 걔 본심이 아니야. 그때 그만 흥분해서 내뱉은 거지)."

콜린스 사전은 'in the heat of the moment'를 "without pausing to think(멈춰서 생각해 보지 않고)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'in the heat of the moment'를 "at a time when you are too angry or excited to think carefully(너무 화가 나서가 흥분해서 조심스럽게 생각해 볼 수 없을 때)"라고 풀이했다.

"We both said things we didn’t mean in the heat of the moment(우리는 그만 흥분해서 진심도 아닌 말을 해 버렸다)."
