모자를 쓰고 있다가 벗어서 떨어뜨려 보자. 모자를 잡은 손을 놓는 순간 바로 떨어진다. 한 1초나 되려나? 어떤 것을 이토록 짧은 시간 내에 한다면 그것에 대해 생각할 필요도 없어야 곧바로 즉시 해야 할 것이다. 

그래서 'at the drop of a hat'은 '즉각, 주저하지 않고'라는 뜻을 가지게 됐다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'at the drop of a hat'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you do something at the drop of a hat, you do it immediately without stopping to think about it(어떤 것을 at the drop of a hat에 한다면, 생각조차 하지 않고 즉시 하는 것이다)"

"People will file lawsuits at the drop of a hat these days(요즘 사람들은 지체없이 소송을 제기한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'at the drop of a hat'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that you are ready to do something at the drop of a hat, you mean that you are willing to do it immediately, without hesitating(어떤 것을 at the drop of a hat에 할 준비가 되어 있다고 말하면, 망설이지 않고 바로 할 의향이 있다는 뜻이다)."

"India is one part of the world I would go to at the drop of a hat(인도는 내가 (기회만 된다면) 곧바로 떠나고 싶은 곳이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'at the drop of a hat'd을 "immediately, or in a way that shows that you have no doubts about doing something(즉시, 또는 어떤 것을 의심하지 않는다는 것을 보여 주는 방식으로)"이라고 풀이했다.

"You can’t just resign at the drop of a hat(그렇게 당장 사임할 수는 없어요)."
