[영어 공부] impersonate(성대모사를 하다, ~를 따라 하다[흉내내다])

 

성대모사(성대'묘사'가 아니다)를 하거나 흉내를 내는 걸 'impersonate'라고 하고, 이런 걸 직업으로 하는 사람들을 'impersonator'라고 한다. 예컨대 '너훈아'나 '태쥐나', '방쉬리' 같은 모창 가수들.

케임브릿지 사전은 'impersonate'를 "to intentionally copy another person's characteristics, such as their behaviour, speech, appearance, or expressions, especially to make people laugh(특히 사람들을 웃게 하기 위해 고의적으로 행동, 말, 외모, 또는 감정 등을 타인의 특징을 따라 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"She's the woman who impersonates all the celebrities on TV(그녀가 바로 TV에 나오는 모든 연예인들을 성대모사하는 여자다)."

콜린스 사전은 'impersonate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone impersonates a person, they pretend to be that person, either to deceive people or to make people laugh(누가 타인을 impersonate 한다면, 특히 타인을 속이거나 웃게 하기 위해 그 사람인 척하는 것이다)."

"He was returned to prison in 1977 for impersonating a police officer(그는 경찰을 사칭한 죄로 1977년에 감옥에 돌아왔다)."

"Tom was a brilliant mimic who could impersonate most of the college staff(톰은 대학교 직원들을 대부분 다 흉내낼 수 있는 뛰어난 흉내쟁이였다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'impersonate'를 "to copy the way someone speaks and behaves in order to make people laugh(사람들을 웃게 하기 위해 타인이 말하고 행동하는 방식을 따라 하다)"라고 풀이했다.
