어제 'impersonate'에 이어 흉내, 성대모사에 관한 단어 하나 더.

'impression'에도 '흉내, 성대모사'라는 뜻이 있고, 누구를 흉내낸다는 말은 이 단어를 이용해 'do an impression of someone'의 형태로 자주 쓴다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'impression'을 "an attempt at copying another person's manner and speech, etc., especially in order to make people laugh(특히 사람들을 웃기기 위해 다른 사람의 행동과 말투 등을 따라 하려는 시도)"라고 정의했다.

"She does a really good impression of the president(그녀는 대통령 성대모사를 정말 잘한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'impression'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An impression is an amusing imitation of someone's behaviour or way of talking, usually someone well-known(impression은 대개 잘 알려진 사람의 행동이나 말하는 방식을 웃기게 따라 하는 것이다)."

"At college in Glasgow he did impressions of teachers, but was otherwise well behaved(글래스고에 있는 대학에서 그는 선생님들 흉내를 냈는데, 그것만 제외하고는 예의 바른 학생이었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'impression'을 "a performance in which someone copies the way another person speaks or behaves in order to make people laugh(어떤 사람이 사람들을 웃기기 위해 다른 사람의 말하거나 행동하는 방식을 따라 하는 공연)"라고 풀이했다.

"He does impressions of famous singers(그는 유명한 가수들 흉내를 잘 낸다)."
