[영어 공부] petty(쩨쩨한, 옹졸한)

 

쩨쩨하다는 표현이 영어에도 있다는 건, 쩨쩨함이 국적, 인종을 불문하고 모든 인류에게 나타나는 공통적인 현상이라는 뜻이 아닐까.

쩨쩨하다, 옹졸하다는 말은 영어로 'petty'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'petty'를 "complaining too much about things that are not important(중요하지 않은 것에 대해 너무 많이 불평하는)"라고 정의했다.

"Don't be so petty!(그렇게 쩨쩨하게 굴지 마!)"

콜린스 사전은 'petty'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone's behaviour as petty, you mean that they care too much about small, unimportant things and perhaps that they are unnecessarily unkind(누군가의 행동을 petty라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 작고 중요하지 않은 것에 너무 신경을 써서 아마도 불필요하게 박정하다는 뜻이다)." 아주 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 어감이다.

"He was petty-minded and obsessed with detail(그는 속이 좁고 사소한 것에 집착한다)."

"I think that attitude is a bit petty(그런 태도는 좀 쩨쩨하지 않나 싶네요)."

맥밀란 사전은 'petty'를 "unpleasant to someone because you care too much about something that is not really important(정말로 중요하지 않은 것에 너무나 신경을 써서 누군가에게 불쾌하게 대하는)"라고 풀이했다.

"It was a bit petty to make me apologize to everyone(모두에게 사과하게 만들다니 좀 쩨쩨한 짓이었다)."
