망치로 못을 박을 때는 정확히 못만 때려야지 잘못해서 손도 때리면 너무 아프다... 근데 못이라는 게 아무래도 손보다는 작다 보니까 딱 맞게 그것만 치기가 어렵다.

그래서 'hit the nail on the head'라고 하면 어떤 문제의 요점을 잘 짚다, 정확하게 맞는 말을 한다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'hit the nail on the head'를 "to describe exactly what is causing a situation or problem(어떤 것이 상황 또는 문제를 유발하는지 정확하게 묘사하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I think Mick hit the nail on the head when he said that what's lacking in this company is a feeling of confidence(내가 보기엔 회사에 자신감이 부족하다는 믹의 말이 정확하게 문제를 짚어 낸 것 같아)."

콜린스 사전은 'hit the nail on the head'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has hit the nail on the head, you think they are exactly right about something(만일 누가 hit the nail on the head 했다고 말한다면, 그들이 어떤 것에 관해 정확하게 옳다고 생각하는 것이다)."

"'I think it would civilize people if they had decent conditions.'—'I think you've hit the nail on the head.'('좋은 환경이 사람들을 세련되게 하는 것 같아.' '네 말이 백 번 옳은 것 같아.')"

맥밀란 사전은 'hit the nail on the head'를 "to say something that is exactly right or completely true(정확하게 옳거나 완전히 참인 말을 하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"With regard to the gentleman’s comments, I think he has hit the nail right on the head(그 신사의 발언에 대해 말하자면, 나는 그가 아주 옳은 말을 했다고 생각한다)."
