[영어 공부] be done and dusted(완전히 끝난)

 

영국식 영어 표현인 'be done and dusted'는 어떤 것이 성공적으로, 잘, '완전히 끝났'다는 뜻이다. 이 표현은 깃털 펜에 잉크를 적셔 글을 쓰던 시대에 유래했다.

잉크로 글을 쓰고 나서는 그 잉크가 마르기를 기다려야 하는데, 그 시간이 오래 걸리니까 사람들은 이 잉크를 흡수하는 가루를 종이 위에 뿌렸다.

그러고 나서 잉크가 다 마르고 나면(done), 그 가루를 털어냈다(dusted). 그래서 어떤 일이 이미 끝났으면 'be done and dusted'라고 하는 것이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be done and dusted'를 "to be complete and finished(완전히 끝난)"라고 정의했다.

"By now the deal was done and dusted(이제 그 거래는 완전히 끝났다)."

콜린스 사전은 'be done and dusted'를 "finished or decided, with nothing more to be said or done(더 이상 말하거나 할 일이 없을 정도로 끝나거나 결정된)"이라고 설명했다.

"The investigation should be done and dusted by the end of next month(그 수사는 다음 달 말이면 완전히 끝날 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'be done and dusted'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if something is done and dusted, you have finished dealing with it and it is not necessary to discuss it any more(어떤 것이 done and dusted 하면, 그것을 처리하는 일을 끝내 더 이상 의논할 필요가 없는 것이다)"
