'outspoken'은 말 그대로 사람들과 이야기할 때 '선'을 넘어서(out) 말하는(spoken) 사람이다. 

긍정적으로나 부정적으로나 다 쓰일 수 있는데 어쨌든 보통 사람들이 생각하는 '이렇게 대놓고 이야기햐면 안 되지'라는 선을 뛰어넘었다는 어감인 것만은 확실하다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'outspoken'을 "expressing strong opinions very directly without worrying if other people are offended(다른 이들이 불쾌해할지 걱정하지 않고 아주 직접적으로 강한 의견을 표현하는)"라고 정의했다.

"Mr Masack is an outspoken critic of the present government(마사크 씨는 현 정부를 직설적으로 비평하는 사람이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'outspoken'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone who is outspoken gives their opinions about things openly and honestly, even if they are likely to shock or offend people(outspoken한 사람은 다른 이들에게 충격을 주거나 불쾌하게 할 것 같더라도 터놓고 솔직하게 자신의 의견을 말하는 사람이다)."

"Some church leaders have been outspoken in their support for political reform(일부 교회의 지도자들은 노골적으로 정치 개혁을 지지하는 말을 했다)."

"He was an outspoken critic of apartheid(그는 아파르트헤이트를 대놓고 비판했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'outspoken'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "an outspoken person states their opinion honestly, even if other people do not like it(outspoken한 사람은 타인이 싫어하더라도 자신의 의견을 솔직하게 진술하는 사람이다)"
