[영어 공부] drill(반복 연습[훈련]시키다)

 

'drill'은 우리가 잘 아는, 구멍 뚫는 기구 '드릴'뿐 아니라 '반복 연습[훈련]시키다'라는 동사 형태 뜻도 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'drill'을 "to tell someone something repeatedly to make them remember it(어떤 것을 반복적으로 말해서 기억하게 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"It was drilled into us at an early age that we should always say "please" and "thank you"(우리는 어릴 적에 늘 "~주세요", "감사합니다"라고 말해야 한다는 것을 반복적으로 훈련받았다)."

"He drilled the children in what they should say(그는 아이들에게 뭘 말해야 하는지를 반복적으로 훈련시켰다)."

콜린스 사전은 'drill'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you drill people, you teach them to do something by making them repeat it many times(사람들을 drill 한다면, 어떤 것을 많이 반복하게 해서 가르치는 것이다)."

"He drills the choir to a high standard(그는 높은 기준을 가지고 합창단을 반복적으로 훈련시켰다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'drill'을 "to teach someone by making them repeat something many times(누구에게 어떤 것을 많이 반복하게 해서 가르치다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Trainers will be drilling new members of the cabin crew on safety procedures(트레이너들은 안전 수칙을 여러 번 반복해서 승무원들에게 훈련시킬 것이다 )."
