[영어 공부] on sb's account(~ 때문에)

 

우리는 살면서 참 많은 일을 타인 때문에 한다. 딱히 우리가 엄청 이타적이지는 않더라도, 사회적인 동물이기 때문이다.

'누구누구 때문에' 무엇을 하거나 어떤 감정을 느끼는 것을 'on sb/someone's account'라는 표현으로 나타낼 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'on sb's account'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something is said to be on someone's or something's account, it is because of that person or thing(어떤 일이 on someone's/something's account 하다면, 그 사람 또는 그것 때문이라는 뜻이다)."

"I'm not very hungry, so please don't cook on my account (= don't cook just for me)(전 별로 배 안 고프니까, 저 때문에 요리하실 필요는 없어요)."

"They were tired, but not any less enthusiastic on that account(그들은 피곤했지만, 그것 때문에 열의를 잃지는 않았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on someone's account'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Your feelings on someone's account are the feelings you have about what they have experienced or might experience, especially when you imagine yourself to be in their situation(on someone's account 한 당신의 감정은 그들이 경험했거나 경험할지 모르는 것들에 관한 당신의 감정, 특히 당신이 그들의 처지에 있다고 상상할 때 느끼는 감정들이다)."

"Mollie told me what she'd done and I was really scared on her account(몰리는 자신이 무슨 일을 했는지 나에게 말해 주었고, 나는 내가 다 두려울 지경이었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on someone's account'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if you do something on someone’s account, you do it because you think they want you to(어떤 것을 on someone's account로 한다면, 그들이 당신에게 그러기를 바랄 것이라고 당신이 생각하기 때문에 그것을 하는 것이다)"

"Please don’t go on my account(저 때문에 가지는 마세요)."
