케임브릿지 사전은 'cloud'를 "to make someone confused, or make something more difficult to understand(상대를 혼란스럽게 하거나, 어떤 것을 이해하기 더 어렵게 만들다)"라고 정의했다.

"When it came to explaining the lipstick on his collar, he found that drink had clouded (= confused) his memory(그의 옷깃에 묻은 립스틱을 설명할 때가 되자, 그는 술이 그의 기억을 흐리게 만들었다는 걸 깨달았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cloud'를 이렇게 썰명했다. "If you say that something clouds your view of a situation, you mean that it makes you unable to understand the situation or judge it properly(어떤 것이 상황에 관한 당신의 관점을 cloud 한다면, 그것이 상황을 이해하거나 적절하게 판단하지 못하게 만든다는 뜻이다)."

"Perhaps anger had clouded his vision, perhaps his judgment had been faulty(아마도 화가 그의 시야를 흐려서, 그의 판단력이 떨어졌을 수도 있다)."

"In his latter years religious mania clouded his mind(그의 말년에 종교적 맹신이 그의 정신을 흐렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'cloud'를 "to affect your thinking in a way that makes you likely to make a bad decision or forget something(나쁜 결정을 내리거나 어떤 것을 잊어버리게 만들도록 영향을 끼치다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Make sure that personal motivation is not clouding your judgment(개인적 모티베이션이 당신의 판단력을 흐리게 하지 말라)."
