케임브릿지 사전은 'blow sth out of proportion'을 "to treat a particular event or problem far too seriously(어떤 특정한 사건이나 문제를 과하게 심각하게 대하다)"라고 정의했다.

"It's ridiculous - we have a tiny disagreement and you blow the whole thing out of proportion!(이건 말도 안 돼, 넌 작은 의견 충돌을 과장하잖아!)"

"Of course, when the papers get hold of a story, it's blown out of all proportion(당연히도, 신문사가 그 이야기에 대해 알게 되자, 그것을 부풀려 보도했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'out of proportion'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you get something out of proportion, you think it is more important or worrying than it really is. If you keep something in proportion, you have a realistic view of how important it is(어떤 것을 out of proportion 하게 만든다면, 그것이 실제보다 더 중요하다거나 더 걱정스럽다고 생각하는 것이다. 어떤 것을 in proportion 하게 유지한다면, 그것이 얼마나 중요한지에 관해 현실적인 관점을 가진 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'blow something out of proportion'을 "to make a situation seem much worse than it really is(어떤 상황이 실제보다 더 나빠 보이게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다.
