케임브릿지 사전은 'off-the-shelf'를 "used to describe a product that is available immediately and does not need to be specially made to suit a particular purpose(즉시 이용 가능하고 특정한 목적을 위해 특별히 만들어져야 할 필요가 없는 제품을 묘사할 때 쓰는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"You can purchase off-the-shelf software or have it customized to suit your needs(당신은 이미 시장에 나와 있는 소프트웨어를 구입하거나 당신의 필요에 맞춰 커스텀할 수도 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'off-the-shelf'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you buy something off the shelf, you buy something that is not specially made for you(어떤 것을 off the shelf 하게 산다면, 특별히 당신을 위해 만들어지지 않은 것을 사는 것ㅅ이다)."
