케임브릿지 사전은 'set in stone'을 "to be very difficult or impossible to change(바꾸기가 불가능하거나 아주 어렵다)"라고 정의했다.

"The schedule isn’t set in stone, but we’d like to stick to it pretty closely(그 스케쥴은 아직 확정된 건 아니지만, 그것을 꼭 따르고 싶습니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'something is not set in stone'을 "said to mean that something such as an agreement, policy or rule is not permanent and that it can be changed(어떤 것, 예컨대 합의나 방침, 규칙이 영구적이지 않고 변할 수 있다고 말하기 위해 하는 말)"라고 설명했다.

"Promises made two or three years before an election are not set in stone and can be changed(선거 이전 2, 3년 전에 했던 약속은 확정된 게 아니고 바뀔 수 있다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'set/cast/etched in stone'을 "permanent and impossible to change(영구적이고 변하기 불가능한)"라고 풀이했다.

"These are just a few suggestions – they’re not cast in stone(그건 그냥 제안일 뿐입니다. 완전히 정해진 건 아니에요)."
