케임브릿지 사전은 'shortchange'를 "to treat someone unfairly, by giving them less than they deserve(어떤 사람이 마땅히 받아야 할 것보다 적게 줌으로써 그를 부당하게 대하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Children who leave school unable to read and write are being tragically shortchanged(읽거나 쓰지 못하는 상태로 학교를 관두는 아이들은 비극적으로 부당한 대접을 받는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shortchange'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are short-changed, you are treated unfairly or dishonestly, often because you are given less of something than you deserve(short-changed 하다면, 대개 받아야 할 것보다 적게 받았기 때문에 불공평하거나 부정직한 대접을 받는 것이다)."

"Women are often still being short-changed in the press(여성은 여전히, 대개 언론에서 부당한 대우를 받는다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'shortchange'를 "to treat someone or something in an unfair way by not giving them enough of the praise, opportunities, attention, etc. that they need or deserve(어떤 사람이나 사물에게 그들이 필요하거나 받아 마땅한 충분한 칭찬, 기회, 관심 등을 주지 않음으로써 불공평하게 대하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Many people in the office felt that they had been shortchanged by their performance evaluations(사무실의 많은 이들이 인사 고과에서 불공평한 대접을 받았다고 느꼈다)."
