케임브릿지 사전은 'throw good money after bad'를 "to waste money by spending more money on something you have already spent money on that is no good(이미 당신이 돈을 쓴 것 또는 쓸모없는 것에 더 많은 돈을 써서 돈을 낭비하다)"이라고 정의했다.
