[영어 공부] vicariously(대리로서, 대리로)

 

'vicarious'는 '(느낌·경험이) 대리의[간접적인]'이라는 뜻이다. 어떤 부모들은 자식을 통해 자신의 못 다 이룬 꿈을 이루려 하는데, 이런 걸 'live vicariously through (their children)'라고 할 수 있다. 

케임브릿지 사전은 'vicarious'를 "experienced as a result of watching, listening to, or reading about the activities of other people, rather than by doing the activities yourself(그 행동을 직접 하기보다는 다른 이들의 행동을 보거나, 그에 대해 듣거나, 읽거나 한 결과로서 경험한)"라고 정의했다.

"She took a vicarious pleasure in her friend's achievements(그녀는 친구의 성취에서 간접적인 기쁨을 얻었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'vicarious'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A vicarious pleasure or feeling is experienced by watching, listening to, or reading about other people doing something, rather than by doing it yourself(vicarious한 기쁨이나 감정은 당신이 직접 하기보다는 다른 사람들이 무엇을 하는 것을 보거나, 그에 대해 듣거나, 또는 읽음으로써 경험되는 것이다)."

"She invents fantasy lives for her own vicarious pleasure(그녀는 대리적인 기쁨을 위해 환상적인 삶을 지어냈다)." 

"Lots of people use television as their vicarious form of social life(많은 사람들은 텔레비전을 사회적 삶의 대리적인 형태로 이용한다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'vicarious'를 "experienced through the actions of other people(다른 사람들의 행동을 통해 경험되는)"이라고 풀이했다.
