케임브릿지 사전은 'meddle'을 "to try to change or have an influence on things that are not your responsibility, especially by criticizing in a damaging or annoying way(당신의 책임이 아닌 것을 바꾸거나 그것에 영향을 끼치려고 하다, 특히 피해를 끼치거나 짜증 나는 방식으로 비판을 해서 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"My sister's always meddling in other people's affairs(내 누이는 언제나 다른 이들의 일에 참견해 댄다)."

"People shouldn't meddle with things they don't understand(자신이 이해하지 못하는 일들에 끼어들려 하면 안 되지)."

콜린스 사전은 'meddle'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone meddles in something, you are criticizing the fact that they try to influence or change it without being asked(어떤 사람이 어떤 일에 meddle 한다면, 그들이 부탁받지도 않았는데 그것에 영향을 끼치거나 그것을 바꾸려고 하는 점을 비판하는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
