'a (long) line of'는 '((긴) ~가계, 계통'이라는 뜻이다. 일전에 내 원어민 친구가 자기는 겁쟁이라며, 자기는 'come from a long line of cowards', 그러니까 기나긴 겁쟁이들의 가계 출신이라고, 다시 말해 조상님들이 전부 겁쟁이였다고 (ㅋㅋㅋ) 했다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'a long line of'를 "a series of people or things that follow each other in time(시간상 서로 뒤를 잇는 일련의 사람 또는 사물들)"이라고 정의했다. 

"She is the latest in a long line of controversial leaders(그는 논란이 많은 지도자들의 기나긴 가계 중 가장 최근의 후계자이다)."

"He comes from a long line of doctors (= a lot of his relatives were doctors before him(그는 의사 집안 출신이다(=그의 친척 중 많은 이들이 그보다 이전에 의사였다))."

콜린스 사전은 'line'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A particular line of people or things is a series of them that has existed over a period of time, when they have all been similar in some way, or done similar things(사람 또는 사물의 특정한 line은 일정 기간 동안 존재한, 어떤 면에서 비슷했거나 비슷한 일을 한 일련의 사람 또는 사물이다)."

"We were part of a long line of artists(우리는 예술가 집안의 일원이다)."

"It's the latest in a long line of tragedies(이것은 기나긴, 일련의 비극 중 가장 최근에 일어난 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'line'를 'a series of connected generations in the same family(같은 가족 내에 이어진 일련의 세대들)'라고 풀이했다.

"Mr Nelson comes from a long line of carpenters(넬슨 씨는 목수 집안 출신이다)."
