케임브릿지 사전은 'have the odds/cards stacked against you'를 "to be very unlikely to succeed because you are not in an good position(좋은 처지에 있지 않기 때문에 성공할 가능성이 낮다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'the odds are stacked against sb/things are stacked against sb'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that the odds are stacked against someone, or that particular factors are stacked against them, you mean that they are unlikely to succeed in what they want to do because the conditions are not favourable(the odds are stacked agsint 하거나 어떤 특정한 요인이 are stacked against 하다면, 조건들이 호의적이지 않기 때문에 자신이 하고 싶은 일에서 성공할 가능성이 낮다는 뜻이다)."

"The odds are stacked against civilians getting a fair trial(민간인들이 공정한 재판을 받을 가능성은 낮다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'be stacked against you'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if something is stacked against you, it is unfair and will probably cause you to fail(어떤 것이 be stacked against 하다면, 그것은 공평하지 않고 아마도 당신을 실패하게 만들 것이다)"
