케임브릿지 사전은 'splutter'를 "to speak in a quick and confused way, producing short, unclear noises because of surprise, anger, etc.(놀랐거나, 화가 났거나 등의 이유로 짧고 불명확한 소리를 내며 재빠르고 혼란스럽게 말하다)"라고 정의했다.
